Mortadella sandwich. All I have to say about backhaus is to try the mortadella sandwich. A perfect blend of mortadella, straciatella cheese, pistachios and arugula that pairs so well with its flaky, buttery croissant casing.

Came in the other day for breakfast. The San Mateo location is smaller than the Burlingame location, so the selection is not as vast (what I was told), but what they did serve, well, it was all quite tasty. Pros- they know pastry dough... from croissants to apple turnovers, everything was super buttery and flaky! Their chocolate chip cookies are massive and very yummy... not too sweet, actually, they were the perfect blend of sweet with the salt for a tiny bit of savory. My brother had one of their sandwiches and that was also very good. Cons- because San Mateo is a smaller store, they don't have as many options and they do sell out! If you're lucky enough to get there when the shelves are full, have fun! After eating the turnover, I went back in and bought their remaining cookies and a few other treats, loved each item! Looking forward to going back and trying more items. Will get bread too, they all looked amazing!

Great pastries! We got in late morning on a Saturday, and they were definitely busy, but we got our food quickly along with a table on the back patio outdoors. We tried a ton of stuff. All great! Chocolate chip cookie, chocolate croissant, coffee cake, chocolate bread...I think a few more things even. Great croissants. Flaky and light.

Absolutely my favorite bakery on the Peninsula. There's almost always a line but it moves fast Highly recommend the + COUNTRY LOAF + CHAUSSON AUX POMMES + PASSION FRUIT KOUIGN AMANN Some of their sweeter offerings are a miss in my book. The pistachio raspberry croissant was much too sweet for my taste. Their holiday buche de noel was also lacking in flavor and the cake was gummy, disappointing for a $70+ cake. Minus the holiday offerings, highly recommended.

We got here on a Sunday around noon to get some of this bread! We procured one of the last few chocolate sourdoughs, so note that you should get here early to ensure they still have what you want. We got the Morning Bun, Heavy-Seeded Rye loaf, and Chocolate Sourdough. Morning Bun (5/5): This is kind of like a gourmet cinnamon roll. The bun itself is pillowy soft yet slightly chewy -- it'd be perfect as a tasty pillow for a morning nap! The cinnamon flavors mildly greet your tastebuds while the taste of citrus zest zap your palette for a bright zing of acidity. I like the fine sugar sprinkled on top as well. Heavy-Seeded Rye Loaf (4/5): The loaf is so heavy I could seriously do some bicep curls with this thing! It's dense with a nice chew, exuding earthy notes of wheat and a slight sourness. The best part is all the different seeds baked into the bread -- a variety and amount to put even the best bird feeds on the market to shame! The seeds add an enjoyable crunch and non-uniform texture to each bite. Chocolate Sourdough (5/5): One bite into this loaf of sourdough made me wiggle my ears in chocolatey pleasure! Its hard exterior shell protects the soft, spongy interior. The first bite kicks you in the mouth with a slobbery smooch of deep dark chocolate flavor paired with the yeasty sourness of lactic acid bacteria. I'd like to make a clam chowder bread bowl out of this thing! There isn't much seating inside, but they do have an outdoor backyard area with seating to enjoy your bread and drinks. Overall, we have yet to try something from here that isn't really good. Would definitely recommend coming here to try the chocolate sourdough at least!

BackHaus | San Mateo 1. Seasonal Savory Danish 2. Everything Croissant Bowl 3. Seasonal Kouign Amann Backhaus in San Mateo is a charming artisan bakery that I used to visit every morning when I worked in the area. Known for its high-quality pastries, breads, and seasonal treats, everything I've tried here has been amazing--from the savory danishes to the buttery kouign amanns. The bakery can get busy, so be prepared for a bit of a wait, but trust me, everything from this place is worth trying!

I was exploring San Mateo and I just happened to be here so here I am. I ordered the chocolate croissant and the spec and egg croissant bowl. The chocolate croissant was very flaky. I just wished there was more chocolate in the croissant. The spec and egg was a nice savory treat. The service here was standard, nothing crazy. The bakery itself was small. There wasn't as many pastries left when I came here. I did come a lot later in the day so I guess go figure. Anyways try it out if you like. :)

Backhaus has the reputation that it does for being such a great bakery for a reason. The quality is top tier for their pastries. In my most recent visit I came by pretty late at around 2pm so a good chunk of their pastries were already sold out, but they still had some croissants luckily. Service is good and helpful if you have any questions regarding their coffee or the coffee beans that they sell. They are attentive and ask what type of coffee machine you have and much more. What I ordered recently: - Iced Mocha with Oatmilk ($7.25) - Croissant ($5.50) - Ham and Cheese Croissant ($7.25) Their mocha is actually one of the best mochas I have had in a long time. Yes their cups are tiny for the price, but the quality is there. It's not Starbucks mocha where it just tastes like a regular hot chocolate. You can actually taste the coffee flavor in the mocha. Their croissants are also incredible. So buttery, flakey on the outside, and soft on the inside. You can tell just by looking at them that they are legit. Their ham and cheese croissant is addicting. So cheesy and tasty. My only regret is not ordering more because they are top tier. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for. I never come in the mornings on the weekend with how hectic it can get sometimes and it being a small space inside, but it was still worth it coming later in the day for me personally. They have great coffee and pastries. I'd recommend Backhaus as an option to anyone that asks me what are some of the best bakeries in the Bay Area.

Omg! I have seen the raspberry pistachio croissant for two years now and have meaning to find this place. I have been told they sell out and get super busy. Birthday breakfast here I come! There was a line at 8 am, yes they were busy and selling out! It all looked so good! The raspberry pistachio did not disappoint! It was as good as it looks! The hazelnut chocolate croissant amazing! The almond croissant delicious. A bite of everything - perfect! Oh and the passion fruit cruffin type thing? Devine!
